Have you ever been talking to someone on the telephone and they lose their signal for some reason…and it takes you several minutes to realize they are no longer there? You were so wrapped up in what you were saying that you did not even notice that there was no response coming from the other end of the line. Aren’t you momentarily embarrassed that you carried on (for who knows how long!) without realizing no one was there?
That totally happens to me and God – quite often I’m afraid. I will be having such a sweet time of worship with the Lord. I will begin to hear Him speak to me regarding a certain issue and, all of a sudden, I am off and running. I’m telling Him exactly how I’m going to fulfill what I think He might be calling me to do. I’m imagining, in my head, how it will all play out. On and on I go. Sometimes, it takes me several days to realize that all of the thoughts and ideas in my head have been, well, all mine. Suddenly, it occurs to me that God has been quite silent and I didn’t even notice.
Do not be hasty to speak, and do not be impulsive to make a speech before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few. – Ecclesiastes 5:2 HCSB
This is definitely something God has been teaching me lately. Maybe it is a situation where I feel I have been wronged. Or, maybe, it is something I feel God may be calling me to do. Sometimes, it is a situation where I am wanting to share my opinion or am tempted to be critical of someone. This verse speaks to every situation.
Do not be hasty to speak…Do not be impulsive…let your words be few…
When it’s just you and God – He should do most of the talking. Make sure you aren’t rambling on and on without realizing that God is no longer a part of the conversation.
