For when you wonder where he is…

As I watched her walk up the steps and take her place, I knew she was scared. She knew all the songs. She had done the work. She had practiced. She had not, however, ever been in front of a crowd before. This was unfamiliar territory and she was scared. I had gotten there early and was sitting as close to the front of the sanctuary as they would let me sit. Yet, as she scanned the crowd, I saw the worry on her face.

Oh no, she doesn’t see me.20120920-011548.jpg

I tried to sit up big. I tried to catch her eye. I even did a small, please-see-me kind of wave. Her eyes darted back and forth, but never seemed to land on me. I tried to send her a mental message.

You’re looking everywhere except. at. me.

The show was over and, as she exited, she saw me and came running. “You’re here!,” she exclaimed.  “Baby, I was there the whole time. Right there in that seat. I was watching you every single moment.”

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you. – Deuteronomy 31:6

There are times that are just like that. We have done the work. We have read the Word. We know the truth. Yet, we find ourselves in unfamiliar territory and we are scared. We look around desperately seeking some sort of comfort – some reassurance that everything will be okay. Why is it that, sometimes, we just can’t seem to find God in the midst of it all? We look around and wonder, “Where is he?”

Could it be, I wonder, that we are just looking everywhere except at him? We are looking at the circumstances. We are seeking encouragement on social media. We are expecting people to save us. We are listening to the voices of the world. We look to everyone and everything except God and then we act shocked when we finally catch a glimpse of him. As if, perhaps, he was just really busy and slipped in at the last minute to see how the trial turned out.

The reality is, however, that he was there the whole time – in the front row – watching every moment – cheering us on.
